Hiya my lovelies, you already know how much I love cinema, so here comes Annoying Clara again to comment about some movies I've seen lately, both from 2013 (originally, I was going to talk about more, but then I decided I'd only talk about two because I tend to go on and on and on). Remember, I'm not a film critic and this is just my amateur cinephile compulsive opinion so, please, don’t throw tomatoes at me! (DO IT, I'm hungry).

The Coppola have rarely failed me (although some of their movies can be annoying). This time I'd like to speak about Palo Alto, a film by Gia Coppola. Well, first, I think the movie is something like the result of adding a bit of Skins to a documentary about teenagers, plus the "coppolistic" touch of The Virgin Suicides to the image; all of this properly fused, and voilà, we have the film! Let's also add a brilliant soundtrack, the kind of songs that you listen to and think "I’m going to turn off the light and dance!" (with neon lights and a slow nod). Personally, I liked it a lot. It isn’t an excellent movie, but it has "something". I suppose it's the cineography which I'm crazy about, and also that I've fallen in love with one of the main characters (Teddy) who even appears in a wolf costume like my beloved Max from Where the Wild Things Are. I also think the film is natural, frivolous (no, that's not the word) and portrays teenagers quite well (there aren’t actors who are playing teenagers at 30, and I think that influences a lot)... It represents the life of adolescent teens really well in general. I don’t even think the movie has a protagonist! It was supposed to be April (Emma Roberts) but each character has a certain importance that describes an attitude, a personality, and thus becomes essential. Well, I'll stop talking now - I'm getting repellent! I just want to say that, in my opinion, it’s a good debut for Gia Coppola.

On the other hand, How I live now, a Kevin Macdonald movie which I can only define as "weird", but not in a "weird and beautiful movie that make you say OH" way, just weird because it mixes several different things and it's like, BANG BANG, what is this!? The plot is set in the midst of a third world war in the immediate future, but, despite that, what really matters in the film is that it's supposed to be the love story between the protagonist and a guy who is her cousin (HER COUSIN). Also, the main character annoys me. Seriously. I think she’s nasty, mean, I don't know what’s going on with her. During the film there's a voice-over who seems to chase the girl (and other people) and, in the beginning, it appears that the voice is coming from a past that the protagonist has suffered, and I thought that maybe it was that, but things aren't clear at all...

Anyway, the children who appear in the movie are adorable, as are the wonderful English landscapes, and the photography is pretty interesting (some scenes reminded me of Wes Anderson's style). There are also some slightly violent images that break the mould of the movie, and, in a way, it's okay, but I don’t know... In the end, everything seems a bit mediocre. I read somewhere someone saying that the end "seems an excuse to let us know why the film has the name it has" and that's absolutely right. I won't tell you the end, neither the plot, because, despite not being very good, I found it entertaining, especially for teenagers. I haven't seen The Hunger Games, but perhaps it's a bit like this. Translation: watch it and love the little redhead girl and the boy with the glasses who looks like Wendy's brother from Peter Pan. C’est tout.
